In this book, pre-treatment techniques considered viable to transform the dredged marine soils into reusable materials in civil engineering field applications particularly are presented. The techniques selected had the unique feature of being ‘green’, i.e. with environmental impact, adopting locally available materials and minimizing energy consumption. The pretreatment methods examined were found to be potentially applicable in situ, though pilot study in the field would be necessary for further verifications.

Part 1 to a series of 2 books on the dredged marine soils of Malaysian waters, Book 1 gives an overview of dredging works and the engineering characteristics of the dredged marine soils retrieved from Malaysian waters. Besides dredging activities, a description of the materials’ physical, chemical and biological properties are included in the early chapters. Also, elaborating on the potentially effective though time-dependent thixotropic hardening of clay and silt sediments, the self-treatment of the soils could be a feasible solution to putting the dredged marine soils in reclamation works as backfills.
