Synopsis

In several cultures, grandparents have been revered as the wisdom keepers. In recent years, changes have occurred in many families due to evelopments in transportation, new technologies, and the pursuit of lucrative careers. As a result, many families found new living locations far from where they were born and raised. Grandparents and grandchildren often get separated in the process.

It is the intention of this book to recapture some of the 'pearls of wisdom' that some grandparents have shared with their children and communities.

Although the focus is on Fifth Graders, Children Learn What Grandparents Teach can prove interesting and adaptable also for students in the Fourth and Sixth Grades.

The book has the potential to be a valuable gift for grandparents, children, relatives, teachers, and friends. However, it also has a high potential to be the basis for school activities, lively conversations and sharing of experiences, applications to current and past events, as well as a guide for recalling and exploring several more proverbs.

—Mavis Aldridge, PhD

Comments in praise of the book:
As a narrative, the themes, structure, style, and transitions are very appealing. Elements of humor, conflict, and an interesting cast of characters add to the richness of the book. It is an excellent choice for teaching proverbs, and the content provides rich material for producing an enjoyable school play.

—Melissa Hugonnett, Retired Teacher

This book is an appealing, creative, and stimulating illustration of a cross-generational community in conversation. It is quite unique in that the lively exchange of ideas is triggered by proverbs. Those wise sayings passed on by parents and grandparents to children. In addition to the rich scope of potential thinking and learning skills, and their application to a variety of subjects, such a dramatic story deserves to be staged!

—Geeta Dabideen, Educator

Occasions which unite the generations are being lost in today's world, but Children Learn What Grandparents Teach has illustrated how invaluable such events are and the importance of reviving them. This unique and refreshing narrative reminds readers of grandparents' potential to impart wisdom by using proverbs to stimulate the thinking abilities of children in an after-school program. Explanations through stories provided by a diverse cast of characters serve well to clarify meanings which help the children to figure out applications of the 'pearls of wisdom' to occurrences as they go through life. Those I learnt from my parents still guide my life!

—Dolores Chandler, Grandmother, Author

Dr. Aldridge's book illustrates the important impact of multi-generational relationships. Her characters reflect the values of multi-culturalism, family, diversity, and community. The book reveals how 'pearls of wisdom' from caring adults can impact not only a child's critical and abstract thinking skills, but provide other life skills as well: problem-solving, empathy, perseverance, and conflict-resolution. A delightful book for all generations of readers!
