Synopsis
Alocasia is commonly known as an ornamental tropical plant. Surprisingly, Alocasia puber (A.puber) was found to have the ability to remove heavy metals from contaminated sites, as described in this book. Contamination of water by heavy metals is a worldwide environmental problem where industrial activities are the major contributor to this pollution. Contamination of heavy metals may lead to various toxic effects on humans and the environment, so it is very important to find the most suitable treatment for this problem. The conventional methods of treating heavy metal contamination in water and soil are costly, causing detrimental effects on the affected area and high sludge production. Therefore, a cheaper and more effective alternative to conventional treatment, phytoremediation, one of the biological treatments, is discussed. The main purpose of this book is to share knowledge and discuss in detail the efficiency of A. puber in the treatment of heavy metal contamination in constructed wetland microcosms. This book will present a new understanding of heavy metal treatment utilising a low-cost technique.
